Antimilitarist march to turn Soietxea’s military headquarters into a vegetable garden
- On 12 November, an anti-militarist march will be held at the headquarters of the Soietxea in Mungia, under the slogan Bota kuartelie and sowing porrue. There are currently 1,300 military personnel in the Southern Basque Country, which, with the addition of police, is the most militarized territory in the European Union.
Ecologists in Action, Butrón Viva in Transition, Berries Otxos, Kakatik, Ernai, Sol, Libertad, KEM-MOC, Internationalist Committees and Huerta Gatika are the organizations that have called for an approach to the event.
The XXVII edition of the march will start from the Plaza de los Fueros de Mungia on the way to the barracks. Those who come to the place will plant leeks at the entrance of the barracks. Organizers say these are “more necessary and healthier than bullets.” They want to use this land for farming.
The commitment to militarization has been criticized in the face of the cuts being made by the Spanish government. The organizers believe that spending in this area contributes to poverty and social exclusion.
The Militarized Territory
In the Basque Country there are around 1,300 military personnel according to 2015 data. Almost half of them were in the Araca barracks. Many local soldiers have taken the road to Zaragoza with the disappearance of the San Marcial Brigade. However, according to the Spanish Ministry of Defense, the number of military personnel in the Basque Country has not decreased. The Ministry expressed its desire to move 250 military personnel to the Araca barracks by the year 2016.
On the other hand, the headquarters of Loyola and Soietxea in Mungia have been kept intact by the Spanish government. These barracks depend on the units of Badajoz and Córdoba.
To these must be added the training camp of the army in the Bardenas. This is the only firing test site in the Air Force. Every year around 2,000 exercises are carried out on the site, some of them with real bombs.
In addition to the number of military personnel, the Basque Country has the largest number of police forces in the European Union. It far exceeds the two policemen per thousand inhabitants recommended by the European Union, there are six in the same number of citizens. According to the 2011 figures, without counting the local police, there are about 18,100 police officers in the Basque Country, half of them from Spain and France. There are 8,000 border guards, 1,100 security guards, 4,800 civil guards, 2,000 Spanish national police and 2,200 French police and gendarmes.
