Today is the third day of strike since the beginning of the school year in Navarre Public Education and after the morning mobilizations, LAB, Steilas, ELA and CCOO –the callers of the protest– have expressed their satisfaction. The torrential rain and cold have constantly accompanied the teachers in the streets of Pamplona.
The teachers took to the streets today with heating exercises, as they already had two strikes in the fall. But without results. The union has also been broken this time, in the two previous calls the UGT, Afapna and ANPE also joined the strike. Not this time. The Board of the Department of Education offered the negotiation and last November the three unions signed an agreement with him.
According to the Department of Education, a number of consensus was reached on ratios, measures to strengthen pedagogy, the workload of teachers and bureaucratic tasks, stability and work awards. The four unions that have called today’s strike have a large majority in education and, for them, this agreement does not meet the needs of education. Today they insist that they will continue to push until they are achieved.
The reduction of the ratios – the number of students per class –, the increase in the stability of teachers, the recovery of purchasing power and the alleviation of the workload are seen as mandatory demands for the improvement of public education, which have reconvened the Minister of Education to negotiate.
Hundreds of umbrellas back in the street
Early strikes began in schools and after picket lines in different places, at 10:00 the columns were launched towards the Department of Education of the Government of Navarre, with headquarters in the Old Town of Pamplona. Hundreds of people gathered there and walked through San Domingo and Estafeta, arriving at Avenida Carlos III, in front of the Government of Navarre. The rain was still high, and in view of the situation, the teachers mentioned that they had not met very little considering how the weather was.
Josu Arraiz of the LAB and Unai Alava of the CCOO have made statements on the spot and although they have not provided specific data on the continuation of the strike, they are satisfied with the response of the education workers. It is said that this is the third strike in a short time and that the weather was the same, and yet a lot of people have taken to the streets.
Mention has also been made of the agreement reached by the other unions, but which is not enough and calls for them to return to the mobilizations: “The decrease in the ratios they achieved excludes Secondary and Vocational Education, and also does not take into account students who repeat the course.” They say they are losing their purchasing power since 2010, “that needs to be recovered.”
The stability of teachers has also been highlighted in the assessment, “we have not yet reached what the European standards dictate.” Due to this last problem, a large group of teachers still do not have a permanent presence in one place and, as a result, they have been reported to have to move from school to school, which does not help to stabilize the pedagogical project of the centers.
