The student organization Ikama denounces the police harassment they are suffering in Vitoria-Gasteiz
- "On more than one occasion we have denounced that this course has intensified the police presence under the excuse of the pandemic, deepening the control of the lives of students. At all times, they have been in the backyards of several schools in Euskal Herria, such as Mendebaldea College, where sanctions have also been imposed, among others. But what we have lived through the last two weeks in the whole of Gasteiz has been unbearable: complaints about different initiatives, persecution of the cars of the secret police to the students..."
In addition, the directorates of some schools have denounced "the criminalization of the student movement".
They have explained that on 21 April the mobilisations were made taking into account the COVID-19 measures, in two columns and ensuring the safety distance between us. However, they have reported that both in Vitoria-Gasteiz and in Salvatierra/Agurain suffered police repression: "As soon as we arrived at the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, the police presence was suffocating, waiting for 3 vans from the Ertzaintza, 3 cars and 7 motorcycles of ammunition in total. The police obstructed the march from the very beginning, ordering that the distances should be kept by the megaphone, and that, moreover, our banners and screams were not adequate. All this in Spanish and under the threat of dissolving the demonstration".
Upon arrival at the Spanish Government Delegation, the Ertzaintza identified two students who held the banner “Our education in the Basque Country!”. In view of this, Ikama manifests, addressing the PNV: "Once again, they have set in motion their repressive forces with the intention of instilling fear of the students and dismantling the student movement. They know that organized and strong students are able to cope with their impositions, and they want to avoid it by eliminating students as subjects from the beginning. But they don't have a holiday with us. They have committed themselves to continuing to organize themselves in order to achieve a Popular and Sovereign Basque School.
