The nuclear negotiations between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran are at a time of great tension and uncertainty. After four rounds of talks in Oman since April, with the mediation of that country, both sides have acknowledged that they have made technical progress, but several important differences seem to persist: Washington demands a complete cessation of uranium enrichment, while Tehran maintains this right under international supervision.
Iran has not yet confirmed its participation in the fifth round of talks, arguing that there have been "contradictions and changes of attitude" on the part of the United States, but at the same time reiterating that it will not "renounce the nuclear program for peaceful purposes".
In this context, President Donald Trump has confirmed that the United States has made a formal offer to Iran to solve the nuclear crisis, warning that "something bad" will happen if Tehran does not respond favorably. The Iranian government, however, denies having received a specific proposal and accuses Washington of sending contradictory messages.
Iran maintains the suspension of sanctions as a condition and rejects any unilateral imposition, while Foreign Minister Abas Araqchi insists that uranium enrichment is not “negotiable” and that the country is “willing to speak only on the basis of mutual respect.”
As a result, international pressure has increased in recent days, and according to intelligence reports cited by CNN, the State of Israel is planning a possible attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities. From Washington, it has been confirmed that Tel Aviv poses this possibility "to face the diplomatic stalemate and the progress of the Iranian nuclear program", but this increases the risk of a military escalation in the region.
In the meantime, Oman continues to mediate and is expected to soon clarify whether there will be a new round of negotiations between the United States and Iran in an environment marked by mutual distrust and the threat of further conflict at the regional level.
