Hamas and Israel hold fifth prisoner exchange
- Three weeks after the ceasefire came into effect, Hamas released 21 prisoners, while Israel released 730. Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog, denounced the images of Israeli hostages as “an example of a crime against humanity.”
As part of the first phase of the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, the two held a fifth prisoner exchange on Saturday: while the Islamist organization released three prisoners, Israel released 183 Palestinian prisoners. As they had done on previous occasions, the hostages were brought to a stand with Hamas members beside them and then sent to Israel in a Red Cross vehicle.
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu complains about the situation of the Israeli hostages and warns that they will respond to this against Hamas: "We'll take precautions." The Palestinian group has also made the same accusation to Tel Aviv in a statement published on Saturday accusing Palestinian prisoners of "gradual killing." However, it has demonstrated its commitment to comply with all phases and conditions of the ceasefire agreed upon by both parties.
Under the terms of the agreement, as part of this first phase of the ceasefire, Hamas will release 33 Israeli hostages in the coming weeks - 21 have already been released - and Israel has pledged to release 1,890 Palestinian prisoners - 730 of whom have now been released. In the next phases of the Meni, Israel and Hamas should begin negotiations for a definitive end to the war.
