With the arrival of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States, the tariffs imposed by Washington on products from countries around the world have made dust in recent months. One of the countries that has suffered the most damaging consequences of the decisions taken by the Trump administration has been, of course, China. In its bid to become the largest international economic power, the tension between the two countries has risen significantly in terms of tariffs. An indicator of this is that just a month ago the United States in general lowered tariffs to 10% for countries around the world, while China, on the contrary, raised them to 125%.
Well, during the weekend the representatives of Beijing and Washington have been negotiating in Geneva (Switzerland), and the talks have paid off: for three months China and the United States have agreed to reduce tariffs on each other by 115%, that is, the United States will reduce the tariff to be paid to Chinese products by up to 30% and China to 10% to Americans. On Monday, the two governments issued a joint statement announcing the agreement, in which they recognized that "economic and trade relations are of great importance for both countries and the world economy."
At a press conference in Geneva on Sunday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the talks between the two powers have been "effective." Trump shared the same message on his social network Truth Social on Saturday: "We had a very good meeting with China. We have discussed many issues and reached many agreements on a wide range of issues." The Chinese representatives have also gladly left the dialogue and have expressed optimism that Washington will be willing to continue negotiating.
