The City Council of Lekeitio stops the licensing of tourist homes

Lekeitio is among the towns with the highest tourist housing ratio in the Basque Country. The City Council also announced the conclusion of an agreement with Alquilar to rent empty houses.
"Tourist housing is a phenomenon that is widespread all over the world, and unfortunately in Lekeitio this phenomenon has become a problem", this is how the City Council of Lekeitio launches the note launched on Tuesday to report that it has stopped the licensing of tourist housing. The municipality has stated that the housing issue is one of the main problems of the Lekeitians "it is clear". In fact, it is a town with one of the highest tourist housing ratios in the Basque Country: there are approximately 92 tourist houses regulated in the town, and the municipality has indicated in the note that they suspect that there will be many more.
In fact, the search for solutions to this problem began in May of last year when the City Council of Lekeitio began a specific change in the regulation and limitation of tourist housing in the HAPO. This process is expected to last two years, so it has been decided that from Tuesday they will stop the licensing of tourist homes.
In March, the City Council published the diagnostic report "Study of the demographic metabolism and the need of Lekeitio", which concluded that there are a lot of empty houses in the town: according to the data of this report, 17.2% of the houses in the town –909 houses– are empty. In addition, 57.4% of the dwellings in Lekeitio are the first dwelling and 25.4% the second.
Agreement with AlquilerMedia
In addition to the measure to reduce "tourism", the City Council of Lekeitio has announced an agreement with the Rental Office for citizens who cannot access a house: the vacant houses will be put into "decent rent" for the whole year by this public company. The City Council specifies in the note that these rentals will be for a period of six years, and that Errentabide has made a commitment to the owners to take care of their homes.
