The French Assembly has rejected the draft Asylum and Immigration Act and the debate on the draft law to be carried out these weeks has been suspended, as the parliamentary majority has by surprise passed the motion of censure tabled by ecologists with 270 votes in favour. In addition to leftist deputies, the motion was supported by Republicans and representatives of the National Union. 265 voted against. However, the spokesman for the French Government, Olivier Veran, pointed out that a joint committee will be set up between the Senate and the Assembly, consisting of seven Members and seven Senators. In this way, the government would be able to pass the law.
Reactions
Having adopted the motion of censure, Darmanin resigns to the French President, but Macron rejects it. Darmanin has described the suspension of the debate on the bill as “political failure”, hampering its trajectory.
"Rather than xenophobic and stigmatizing discourses towards refugees, associations supporting migrants have advocated a migration policy that guarantees the fundamental rights of all." They call on the French Government to withdraw the bill definitively.
