The Yellow Jackets, things nobody expected
  • They appeared in October as a spontaneous social movement in the French State, united by the calls to protest that spread from the social networks and since November 17 they mobilize every Saturday against the new taxes that the government of Emmanuel Macron has imposed on fuels, but later to denounce the social and economic policies of the last years: how to cut public services, relieve taxes to the rich people, and precarize employment. Despite the fact that government policemen, using the latest anti-terrorism rules, have taken the Protestants very hard and have caused dozens of serious injuries (with their eyes lost, with their hands mutilated…), the mobilisations have come alive in February 2019.

How can we interpret the particular phenomenon of these Jackets, which are found by some exponents of right-wing populism and others of a new left-wing rebellion? Here are two testimonies. The journalist, filmmaker (Merci Patron) and left-wing parliamentarian François Ruffin will report on a Saturday in November what the Yellow Jakas have told him, blocking several roundabouts in his region (Pikardia): “My yellow Saturday.” Environmental and alterglobalist militant Patrick Farbiaz has written in the Reporterre space “Jaka Horiak are the first mass ecological social movement”, which these days Jaka Amarillo publishes, documents and texts.
