Group immunity in Hego Euskal Herria is between 2.4% and 6.2%
  • Carlos III of Spain The Institute of Health presented on June 4 the results of the second phase of the investigation IgG antibodies, the results of which can be consulted in full. The first results showed that group immunity was very low in Hego Euskal Herria, and the tests that have been done for the second time indicate the same: By region, Álava is the province with the highest unemployment rate, with 6.2%, similar to Navarre: 6.4%. Almost half in Bizkaia, only 3.7% and 2.6% in Gipuzkoa.

The research is characterized by the fact that on three occasions a seroprevalence test will be performed on the same people, that is, it will be analyzed whether antibodies against the coronavirus are developed with the blood draw. More than 60,000 people are being tested and in this second phase more people have participated, demonstrating the good reception that the study has had among the citizens. The second phase tests were performed between May 18 and June 1 and here are some of the data from the second results:

In Álava, 7.1% had IgG antibody developed in the first wave of the research and 6.2% in the second. The "seroevolved", that is, those who did not have this antibody on the first occasion and developed it in the second test, the new members who have somehow developed immunity, have been 0.8%. The number of people tested was 687 in the first phase and 727 in the second.

In Navarra, 5.8% had the IgG developed in the first wave of the research and 6.4% in the second wave. 1% of new members who have developed immunity have been in favor of immunity. The number of people tested was similar: 1,737 people participated in the first wave and 1,755 in the second wave.

In Bizkaia, 3.5% had the IgG antibody developed in the first wave of the research and 3.7% in the second. 0.4% of new partners who have developed immunity have been legal for the new group. The number of people tested was 1,195 on the first occasion and 1,249 on the second. It is noteworthy that in Bizkaia fewer tests have been carried out depending on the number of inhabitants.

In Gipuzkoa, 2.4% had the IgG antibody developed in the first wave of research and 2.6% in the second. 0.6% of new members who have developed immunity have been in favor of immunity. The number of people tested was 950 on the first occasion and 1,019 on the second.

One in three has gone unnoticed the virus

Another data provided by this study is as follows: One-third (33%) of COVID-19 cases are asymptomatic. This has been deduced in 2.8% of the cases in which the test was performed, although they did not have any symptoms, because they had developed IgG antibodies.

20% of PCR positive tests show no IgG antibodies

UPV researchers Carlos III. They participate in this research of the Health Institute by conducting PCR tests in the CAV. The results of PCR are more reliable, as instead of IgG antibodies, it detects the genomes of the virus and a week after a person becomes infected with the virus and develops antibodies. In this sense, it is significant what the results of the second wave of the research Carlos III.aren indicate: those who tested positive in PCR two weeks before the serological test (which is performed extrajudicially, which measures the IgG antibodies), that is, those who detected the virus, have an 80% developed by antibodies.

Here we can read the interview with Ugo Mayor, coordinator of this group of researchers from the UPV/EHU.

The first results of the research were collected in this news item: "In Hego Euskal Herria immunity is 4.4% and contagion is four times higher than official data indicates," he added.
