Anna Campbell, from Bilbao La Vieja, reported the eviction in a note made public by the general assembly of the free zone of Bilbao. The eviction was reportedly carried out last Tuesday, 10 September. In the morning, as they approached space, they realized that in the evening they had entered space with a radial and changed the lock. “A group of breeders got entrenched inside,” they said.
The Assembly has stressed that, to date, there are no complaints of occupation of space. They denounce that eviction has been instigated by the speculator of space, “prioritizing mafia practices over their bourgeois laws to make a totally illegal eviction.” To this end, they have stated that "he has taken advantage of the work and face of the poor who do not have a penny", while he has remained in the shadow: “Confronting the precarious with the speculator in the shadow.”
In addition to evicting the space, they have denced that they have stolen the material they had in it and have thrown into the trash items that have not been recognized as valid: books, posters and fanzines. In addition, they added that the robbery was "imputed to racialized persons, who have been arrested in Madrid".
“We want to point out and denounce the role of this well-known speculator in the context of the gentrification process that the neighborhood suffers (…) It is clear that as long as we continue to speculate with the lives of the people who compose it, we will continue to denounce and fight,” they stressed.
The occupation of the Anna Campbell free space was notified at the end of September. As reported in their first note, they occupied the space to cope with the neoliberal and precarious city model being promoted by the authorities, choosing the occupation as a tool in the face of the gentrification and tourist processes that the city has been suffering in recent years, in order to recover spaces of people and people.
When it came to naming space, Anna Campbell was named in tribute to the Kurdish wrestler who died in 2018.
