The workers at Huerta de Peralta in Azkoien, Navarre, are on indefinite strike since the 26th December in order to defend their rights and demand that the company reinstate the four workers it has sacked. They held a multitudinous demonstration in Iruñea on 7th January, and many citizens supported the workers.
The struggle took a great step forward at the end of December in order to reach public opinion, amongst other things holding protests at the company’s gate in Azkoien. The Navarrese police attacked them violently and the trade union LAB called for the resignation of the Navarrese government's head of department Mari Jose Beaumont.
Over recent months the workers have achieved better conditions as a result of their strike, but the management sacked four LAB trade unionists. They were leading the workers' protest. LAB has six of the nine union representatives in the company.
Now, in addition to improved working conditions, the workers are demanding the reinstatement of their workmates. On January 4th the company made it known that it would not accept the workers' conditions and, consequently, the decision to continue with the protest was taken, for instance with the demonstration in Iruñea.
They have received the support of more than thirty international workers' organizations, and one of those organizations' representatives has travelled to Azkoien to express that support. And LAB has organized a "Solidarity Day" for Huerta de Peralta for January 11th, which will include a Basque-Arabic lunch.
