24 January 1631,
The salt rebellion began when 1,500 citizens, armed in their hands, showed their discomfort against this tax in the Gernika Assembly.
With an attitude contrary to the nobility and the cacique, they accused the Congressmen of being slaves in Madrid, and asked that the plain people participate in the assembly and that they had the right to speak in Basque on the boards. The king of Spain ordered the salt of the Lordship of Bizkaia to be hijacked and converted into a monopoly on sales, increasing the price. Many citizens declared the decision against the forces and took the weapons.
The rebellion lasted for three years and ended in 1634, when they were arrested and killed by their superiors.
