Last week I had a nice meeting with a group of women that I hadn’t seen for a long time, and we talked about doing it, linked to spaces of technology and creation.
The oldest of these women, who is on the frontier of retirement, is a programmer and enjoys programming code. Perhaps you can understand by reading this that you enjoy your work, but this is not the case. It is immersed in the enjoyment of programming as anyone else would in ceramics, sewing, the garden... not to fulfill anyone’s goals, but as an activity linked to one’s own challenges. Another woman said that she was impatient with the idea of spaces dedicated to doing, that she feels uncomfortable with this expectation of having to do; that for her, spaces to do are more interesting than spaces to be. A third said that in places like this, he misses the body. In the spaces we create as human beings, in general, and even more so in those linked to technology, where in most of the tasks the hands and the mind linked to a device are the center, he said that the body is at rest. He doesn’t like these spaces because he lacks the tools that would make better use of the potential of the body, because he feels limited in these spaces.
Maybe next week you will have a holiday, and during the holidays there is a very interesting dynamic in the lives of many: the opportunity. The possibility of doing, the possibility of being, the possibility of shaking the body... Perhaps the biggest problem that we have in the spaces of creation of these societies is that they are very restricted models, totally oriented, on the path to be viable, designed with too many limitations. I do not believe, however, that within the social systems and worldviews that we have, in the short term, there will be the possibility of creating spaces from institutions that receive the interesting points of view that these women shared with me. We'll have to look and do it in other places.
