The evolution that the Internet has taken over the last 15 years, together with its technological and business model, makes us think that it is a tool to increase the worst aspects of humanity. Around the world, agents have been created that are not satisfied with this idea. They mainly work in the protection of digital rights (access to information, privacy, freedom of expression) and the fight against digital violence. Along this road, they have understood the need for digital sovereignty and discovered in free software the technological model that drives this conception of the world.
From the very beginning I heard the motto of this year’s Durango Fair, “pick it up is give”, the whole imaginary of free software came to mind. Because the global conception of free software works the same way: by sharing what you take, you can broaden knowledge for everyone, and that fluidity of knowledge is multiplying, creating alternatives that replace the oppressive digitalization model that we have.
In this performance, the network mastodon.eus has completed its sixth edition this year. There are many agents who are reinventing the Basque digital environment, showing that life can be understood in many ways. They do not have large infrastructures and many carry out their work in the digital field outside the working day. From this corner, I would like to thank you for the good work you are doing. Some of them, because there are many, if you want to know them, I invite you to participate in the program of Kabi@ Digitala of the Durango Fair this year.
