Marinus Van Der Lubbe has been acquitted by a recent judgement in Germany. In practice, the sentence makes no sense, since the young Dutchman was executed in 1934 at the age of 24. But symbolically, it matters. 75 years ago, on February 27, 1933, the Berlin Reichstag caught fire. By chance, the Nazis discovered that Van Der Lubbe was walking around and that the young Dutchman had been in contact with the Communist Party in his hometown; he was the perfect culprit. Today, the origin of the fire is still unclear, but there is no doubt that Hitler benefited greatly from it. It was an excuse to establish a state of emergency, which was a great step forward for Hitler’s purposes.
