According to Virgenes in a statement, the Donostian company will be the only vaccine to be carried out outside the United States; it will also be produced by North Dakota companies such as Aldevron and Catalent from New Jersey. Gene therapy is a new technology that involves the introduction of functional components that are not present in a person's genome, in cells or tissues.

The MGB consortium, which brings together several research and medicine groups working at Harvard University, has taken over the production of the vaccine and has specified that Viralgen, created in 2017, has been selected as a Pro10 technology. This technology "allows to produce large volumes of adenoassociated viruses in a short period of time and, at the same time, adapt quickly to the changes that the virus may undergo". The Basque Government is also present in this project together with Viralgen.

The Donostia company has the capacity to produce millions of vaccines and for this it is building a new building in the Miramón Park. The first clinical trials of the vaccine are planned for autumn and the vaccine is expected to start production by 2021.
