Precariousness: Part and Characteristic of Work in Fast Food Companies
  • A young man working at the Mec-Mec Pizzeria in Gorliz died on 9 January after suffering an accident while distributing food on his motorcycle. Several trade unions and movements have denounced him as the second person to die as a result of precariousness in 2017.

The accident occurred on December 30, when the 24-year-old boy was making his last separation of the day. The youth organization Ernai of Uribe Kosta explains that precariousness is a characteristic of work in fast food companies. He denounces that the pressure to arrive as soon as possible and make as many trips as possible is part of the work, since the workers get rewards for making more deliveries, while the wrong shipments have negative effects on them.

The union LAB explains that the precariousness has increased under the pretext of the crisis, “they have abandoned the adoption of corrective measures, hence the increase in accidents.” The union believes that the right to work in adequate and safe working conditions should be “demanded” from companies and administrations.

The youth organization Ernai and the unions ELA, LAB, ESK, STEILAS, EHNE and TRES have indicated that mobilization is essential. For this reason, a meeting will be held on January 13 at 12:30 in front of the Mec Mec Pizzeria in Sopela.
