Lindane has been widely used for industry and insecticides for decades, such as those produced or used in Bizkaia by Chemical SA, Nexana SA or Insecticidas Condor. It is now banned because it has been proven to cause cancer. However, according to data from the nine hydrographic confederations of the Spanish State, pollution caused by lindane is still common.
In the Southern Basque Country, the presence of the substance lindane in the Ebro basin is twice as high as that allowed and also easily exceeds this limit in the streams of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa. Traces of lindane have been found in the Oiola reservoir, Mount Jata in Lemon, Iguzkitza and Zadorra, among others.
In the face of the ban, in the past, companies made illegal discharges in numerous places – in many cases, taking advantage of the ignorance of the carriers – and if their exact location is not known, environmentalists find it difficult to reverse the situation. For this reason, in the Spanish State they have launched a campaign together with Filtrala on social networks to obtain information. This platform allows the anomalous and secure delivery of data through a virtual mailbox.
Ecologists Marstan believes that citizen participation is necessary to solve this serious problem of pollution.
