Five more days of strikes by teachers of public education in the Basque Country
- The unions Steilas, ELA, LAB and CCOO announce the third cycle of strikes between May 12 and 16 in favor of strengthening public education. They explain that the final proposal transmitted by the Department of Education does not provide an adequate response to their demands.
After nine days of strikes between January and April, thousands of public teachers from Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa will once again go on strike to defend their demands. This was announced on Thursday during a press conference in Bilbao by representatives of all trade unions. If no steps are taken, on 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 May, public education will experience the third cycle of strikes for five days.
Both representatives of the Department of Education and President Imanol Pradales himself have often spoken about the need to incorporate resources to strengthen public education. But the unions complained that they had not received any written proposals since the last day of the strike, and that no new calls for a negotiating table had been made.
Well, the proposal for a written convention came to them on Wednesday afternoon, just a few hours after the press conference they had announced. The unions have said they will not sign it because it is proposed as an "ultimatum" and still does not provide an adequate response to their demands.
As in previous campaigns, the streets are ready to be filled. On April 3, the last day of the strike, thousands of teachers gathered at the Lake of Vitoria-Gasteiz, in front of the Basque Government, and demonstrators tried to enter the interior of the residence. The Minister of Education, Begoña Pedrosa, called the unions to a meeting the next day, on April 4, but the workers’ representatives denounce that it was only a “pretence” for the negotiation of the minister.
Teachers demand an improvement in the working conditions and educational quality of public education. They say they are fighting for a sisterm that puts students "at the center", for which they need resources and measures.
