The shutdown comes shortly after the newspaper published an article that confuses the close allies of Prime Minister Viktor Orban and the director of the Central Bank in a corruption case.

The editorial Mediaworks explains that the reason for the shutdown is significant monetary losses of around 5 trillion florins – more than 16 million euros. In the last ten years, the newspaper has lost 74% of its readers.

The editorial was handed over to Vienna Capital Partners two years ago after they bought their shares from the Ringier AG group and a foundation around the socialist party. According to HVG magazine, it is suspected that it may be a government-related company.

The newspaper’s editorial team clarifies that as soon as the notice was received, emails were blocked and access to the offices was prohibited. Journalists say they will take legal action, including not inviting representatives to the meetings where the decision was made. Workers have used the newspaper’s Facebook page to denounce the shutdown and the government’s silence.

The Hungarian Press Union HPU has argued that it compromises media pluralism, freedom of expression and workers’ rights. He believes that the decision taken in an untransparent and “dictatorial” manner could have serious consequences for the independent press and investigative journalism in Hungary.

The Socialist Party in the European Parliament is opposed to the closure. Gianni Pittella, president of the group, has been hard at it: “Freedom of the press is at risk in Hungary today.” For them, it is the attitude of the dictatorial states towards the clarification of cases of corruption that belongs to the Hungarian government.

Several newspapers have also expressed their solidarity with the newspaper langileei.Larunbatean, where 2,000 people gathered to protest in front of the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest.
