Diamond is pure carbon and can be produced everywhere. On the contrary, the trees that will provide the wood can grow anywhere but on planets with very specific living conditions. They are the words of a certifier, astronomer, cosmologist, writer and popularizing science, Neil deGrasse Tyson. The growth of the tree requires a miraculous balance: an atmosphere with oxygen, liquid water, ideal temperatures and an ecosystem that sustains life. These conditions exist only on planets like ours, where life has developed for millions of years.

This wood-diamond yoke reminds us that truly valuable is not the one that shines, but the one that gives life. A tree, its branches to the sky, is what if it is not the result of cosmic forces that were uniquely aligned on Earth. In a universe where diamonds are just a type of crystal, wood is a miracle, life in its most peculiar form.

Maybe it's time to reconsider what's really rare and valuable.

Next time you have to make a decision about the future of a tree, look at it as the equivalent of the wonder of the universe that it is, the infinite source of the breath of all of us.
