Israel is one of the few countries where HP has a massive presence. According to Who Profits and the Global Exchange, HP provides crucial support to maintain the illegal Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza that began 48 years ago. Here’s how HP helps maintain occupancy:
Military checkpoints: The network of military checkpoints scattered throughout the West Bank (such as Abu Dis, Bethlehem, Ephraim’s Gate, Hebron, Jenin, Jericho, Nablus, Tulkarem and Tarkumia) is one of the most intolerable parts of the Israeli occupation. These checkpoints severely restrict Palestinian movements, undermine the Palestinian economy and hinder employment, professional and health rights. HP designed and maintains the BASEL system of biometric identification cards used by Israeli military personnel at these terrible checkpoints.
Identification systems: Israel maintains a personal identification system that excludes non-Jewish Israeli citizens. The system classifies citizens by ethnicity and religion. Israeli Jews have blue cards and Palestinians who can enter Israel receive orange and green cards. HP designed this system, produces cards and stores the necessary information.
Information technology for the Navy: The Israeli navy maintains an illegal blockade of Gaza, restricts the work of Palestinian fishermen and bombs Gaza during military operations. HP maintains the technological information structure of the Israeli Navy and sells essential computer tools to the Israeli Navy.
Illegal colonies for Jews only: HP has a development center in the illegal colony of Beithar Illit. At the same time, it is the technology service provider of two of the largest colonies in the West Bank (Mod’in and Ariel) that only accept Jews.
Prisons in Israel: A number of Palestinian political activists are imprisoned in Israeli jails. HP is a provider of prison computer equipment and maintains various computer systems used in prisons.
Not all of HP’s activities in support of the illegal Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza are public. So, while the above list is enough to condemn HP, it probably doesn’t include all the activities. Please do not buy any Hewlett Packard products.
