The Dutch Marinus van der Lubber burned the Reichstag or German parliament. Despite being an individual act, Hitler, already Chancellor, used it to fight the Communists. It established a state of emergency and harassed left-wing opposition, arresting thousands of citizens and imprisoning 4,000. It was the starting point for the Third Reich.
