The Francoist mayor of Gernika ordered the withdrawal of Basque inscriptions from the cemetery and their placement in Spanish. They had to remove the stones written in Euskera so that their owners were not punished. The policies against the Basques and Euskera that came from previous centuries were taken to the extreme by the Francoists until the language of public life almost disappeared.
