The French Government closed the border with the Spanish State. The Spanish Republic lost control of the sea and prevented it from receiving war material. Volunteers who emigrated from other countries to fight fascism had to cross the border through the Pyrenees. Likewise, those fleeing the Franco regime had serious difficulties crossing the border.
