The Spanish Civil Guard arrested 15 people in Barcelona to stop the Catalan referendum on self-determination convened on 1 October. Most were officials of the Generalitat and explored the offices of the Catalan government. Thousands of people gathered outside the offices to protect peacefully detained detainees. The political whirlwind, which would last for several weeks, gained another rank.
