The Algerian War of Independence breaks out. The National Liberation Front and other independence groups fought against the French army and far-right armed groups in favour of the French union.

Eight years later, it ended in 1962, when Algeria managed to liberate itself from France. The Algerian struggle then inspired revolutionaries around the world.
