Ekaitza eta beste 34 ipuin | Kate Chopin (itz.: Joxe Mari Berasategi) | Erein eta Igela, 2021

The 181 issue in the Universal Literature collection allows us to learn about the work of Kate Chopin. The best known work of this American writer is the novel The Awakening (1899), which was once despised and rejected until the 1960s. The awareness of some women between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is the main theme that will appear in their works. It is, therefore, a reference work of protofeminism.

Chopin wrote these stories at the end of the 19th century to have an income after widowhood. He offers us photographs of his time made with a critical look, showing the hidden: “The transit of human beings was no longer important; going up or down from the world; getting married or dying. It didn't matter if a stroke of chance gave money or withdrew it. All the trepets the world offers man for entertainment seemed empty and void.”

This book will also help us to learn more about the history of America. In fact, the British and Spanish empire has not been the only ones that have colonized and left a mark in America. In these narratives the community of the Acadians or goats appears. In other words, cryols after the French settlers. The characters are, therefore, the Louisiana French-speakers in the south of the United States, along with the "white lords", "black slaves" and "indigenous savages".

Finally, I would also like to say two words about the Basque translation of other languages and cultures. The challenges of Basque translation and non-standardization are the concerns I want to share. The prevalence of the use of the high standard Basque language in some translations requires readers to know it well and, as with the doubling of television, risks to homogenize translated literary works.

In this case, it cannot be denied that the translator has worked hard, especially in the expression of orality. However, I have to acknowledge that the choice of Goierri’s oral language has been alien to me and I have been slow to get used to it. It is not easy to choose in a non-standard language and open roads.
