Heineken vs. Patrimony of Brazil
  • In Brazil, the Dutch multinational Heineken, after the authorization of the authorities, is building a plant in an area where 11,000 years old human remains were found, regardless of their archaeological value. The debate is boiling.

In 1974, in Lapa Vermelha, Brazil, the remains of a woman 11,000 years ago were found. They were the oldest human remains in America and flipped over the theories of continental settlement.

Now, the Dutch company Heineken is building a factory in this area. It has recently become apparent that, when granting permits to beer producers, Brazilian institutions did not take into account their archaeological value.

Works are currently paralysed, while the debate focuses on the creation of 350 direct jobs, with a significant economic impact on the environment, but jeopardising an important yet under-studied site.
