They called it “the site of railroad workers,” because it was the office of the dead. And it wasn't by chance, because the railroad workers were the ones who suffered the most from Franco's retaliation. They used to participate in the workers’ struggles, they were resilient and obstinate, and the franchisees had to clean up the sector.
According to historian Francisco Polo, 83,000 workers were dismissed, 88% of the total employed in the sector. 6,800 were imprisoned, nearly 100 were sentenced to death and we do not know how many were killed without any trial. Recently, a sculpture has been placed in his honour at the Madrid station of Atocha.
