New technologies are very successful in our world, but what is of particular concern is the misuse of the Internet between children and young people, in the most advanced countries 99% of children use it every day. Experts do not agree on whether this type of use generates dependence; they say that serious studies are lacking. But who has to investigate? Companies in the sector? Governments? In any case, reflection on the use should be encouraged, and they say that “we need an educational system” to solve the adolescents’ lack of critical attitude. Ask for miracles to continue with business.
We have recently seen population movements fleeing hunger, war and misery. Faced with the increase in the problem, the Member States of the European Union are talking about reception quotas, but I have never heard of a real criticism of these migrations, or of wanting to analyse the problem, which may jeopardise our Western life.
The management of the Greek debt once again demonstrates the lack of a critical attitude in our society. The fault is the fault of the Greeks, we heard it, why do we have to fix between all of them what they have done wrong? Yet we all suffer from pollution and climate change from the excessive use of fossil energies. The developing peoples have not participated in this consumerism, but they suffer the same consequences as we do. Likewise, oil and other basic raw materials of our capitalism are at the heart of most global conflicts.
While we sold marmalades of fruits produced in our house, a distributor interested in marketing our products in a German organic market explained how they worked: they advertised in a restricted area until they created “necessity”. Only then did they put the product on sale. A technique called marketing that mixes the desire and the need to do business and serves to sell everything (food, computers, smartphones, culture, etc.) and achieve political goals.
The whole society, not just adolescents, should promote a rigorous critical sense to analyze our actions, to distinguish well what is the need and what is marketing. Children and young people will acquire these values if they see that critical sense is worked in their environment, in vain. We must overcome hypocrisy.
