I must confess that Werther is my favorite opera, or one of my favorites. Maybe because Jules Massenet's score is really elegant and enveloping, or because I like that kind of romantic drama. In addition, this opera is the first one I saw when I was little, I really liked it at the time and I would leave a special imprint, no doubt. On this occasion, the production of ABAO, Teatro Regio di Torino, did not fail me. A classic, realistic staging, with light and colors very well chosen to reflect the atmosphere of each scene and, more importantly, beautiful voices.

French tenor Roberto Alagna has earned his fame. It has a great personality and before this artist there is no tibieza: either you love it or the opposite. I really like it. It has a natural voice, one of those that comes out very easily, clean and bright, a gift. And it moves on the stage as experienced actors, with solture and strength. Maybe too much force to play the role of poor Werther, because he's a character of a delicate soul. In this respect, we cannot forget the romantic version of Alfredo Kraus in the best sense. However, Alagna's fresh singing hides these inconveniences.

We enjoyed a round show. Mezzo Elena Zhidkova made a beautiful Charlotte, and soprano Elena de la Merced received great applause with an elegant and well interpreted Sophie. Baritone Manuel Lanza seemed to us to be a convincing and a bit discreet Albert. In general, we are dealing with a group of robust interpreters. Special mention should be made of the Donostian tenor Jon Plazaola, who has always acted effectively.

However, the staging aspect stands out, very classical, but not neutral. Stage director David Alagna, Roberto's brother, obtained very suggestive atmospheres with seemingly decadent elements. Excellent.

And finally, we cannot forget the work of Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa, under the batuta of master Michel Plasson, very suitable at all times.
