I mean, disregard for the economy. No one denies that one of the causes of the crisis in the West is the abuse of financial markets. Few remember, however, that the preponderance of these financial markets stems from the underestimation of the real economy. In short: we reached the top because we believed and promoted in the real economy; and we reached the bottom because we surrendered to the financial tricks of the pseudo-economy. Our late father used to say to us now forty years ago: “Today’s young people learn to spend before they earn.” What would he say if he lived now... Not only in the
financial markets, but also in the Basque society there is no fashion for the real economy. The patriotism here generally makes it easy – too easy – to grasp the vindictive rhetoric of big dog words and easily – too easy – to ignore the real economy of everyday life.
We usually talk about the patriotism of Scotland, Flanders or Catalonia. But they think of the real economy and we, on the other hand, think of the canpolar rhetoric.
