Balcony of Goierri
  • The late “Little Lazkao” Joxe Miguel Iztueta made the viewpoint of Lazkao very famous. The name of the place where he was born was always proudly attached to his reputation. The birthplace of the great bertsolari is not only a traditional promenade of high rollers, but also a spectacular place for all visitors.

From the extensive grasslands of Lazkaomendi, the Aizkorri and Aralar mountain ranges are joined in a single clearing. From Lazkao, Ordizia and Zaldibia you can reach the road there; either on foot or by car. If we obey the name and location of the place, we should start the walk from the first one. But since the books of guides have made the passage from Lazkao well known, we will depart from Kabbalah.

The cavalry is located at the foot of the Sierra de Aralar. When the visitor arrives at the vast grasslands of the popular entrance, he will be seduced by the immense Mount Chindoki that rises in his liver. From its famous elevation of 1,346 meters, you can also see the sea of our coasts on the days when it comes out. Along the Gran Vía, it is necessary to cross the inner city and go to the neighborhood of Egileor. The cement road that will lead us to Lazkaomento begins in the group of farms formed by Ola, Molino de Ola and Olalde.
Uphill, in search of paradise

Cross the bridge over the river and face the only obstacle of the excursion, 400 meters above sea level. Next to the beautiful grove of trees, the steep slope of short distance leads the road to the curve where the farm of Bianda (Miranda) is located. The first paradisiacal image, accompanied by the domestic animals that go halfway, comes to view. To the left of the road, as if on the side, the tops of the mountains of Txindoki and El Castillo greet us. When Gipuzkoa was derived from the Kingdom of Castile in the year 1200, the Crown of Castile was given the Rock Castle of Auso and for this reason this mountain is known as the Castle.

The road from here is a short one. The open pastures on both sides of the route lead us to Lazkaomendi. Just 500 meters by foot, the traveler arrives at the first important stop after the Okobio and Bihar farms: To the restaurant Itxurrene. The hot broth to replenish the strength or the end of the chorizo is a lush snack in this house. If you want something else, you will find a wide range of traditional cuisine in the area.

The road is on the way down. Often in the farm complex there is the hermitage of San Juan Menor, which is actually called San Juan Ante Portam-Latinam. Whoever needs a blessing to climb the final slope has the opportunity right here. Up the road but, it is not more than another 500 meters, and the one who arrives will see that it is worth doing. We pass half a dozen curves and the road leads us to the house called Lartxai. Although it was once a neighborhood children’s school, it is now a farmers’ association. Special, however, the location does: The roads that arrive from Zaldibia, Lazkao and Ordizia merge there.

We have to leave the crossing behind and take the road to Ordizia to reach the viewpoint of Goierri, just 200 meters away. The Pipas restaurant is located in the Aljoyu Goena farmhouse, if it is appreciated in these places, the most appreciated. If it is worth highlighting the warmth of its meals, it is even more the pleasure of sitting on the porch of the house. With a half-forest in your hands, the season doesn’t matter much when such a paradise envelops you. On one side, Txindoki and Larraone, Malloas de Amezketa; next to Uakorri, Balerdiu, Castillo and Gañeta. On the other side, the balanced and hard mountain range of Aizkorri. One of the most significant mountain ranges in the Basque Country in a single soaldi. And down below, until the view gives, the succession of the peoples of the region.
