The Little Boys' Party in Bilbao
2013ko maiatzaren 06a
The Bilbao Seven can hardly be imagined without a small group. The Bajío tradition is spread to the heart of the Biscayan capital, as evidenced by the annual Chiciero Festival, which has been held every year since 1964. It is celebrated on the 11th of October, a very marked day, because it is the day of the Mother of Begoña, the patron saint of Bizkaia.

Now 44 years old, the priest named St. Epi organized it for the first time in honor of the dead chicéritos, but it is done in honor of all the men and women who have kept the tradition alive since then. Over the years the festival has been consolidated in the calendar of Bilbao and has also conquered the media scene because it appears in newspapers, radio and television. In 1997, the various groups promoting the festival formed a working committee to give it a permanent character. The main characteristic of this festival is its spontaneity, because there is hardly anything organized in advance. Just make a flower offering to the godmother and sing a popular song called Salbe de los chicerios.

In the 1950s and 1960s, every bar in Bilbao’s Sevenfold had an itsulapico called Caja de los Chiciteros (Little Boy’s Box). Destined for the orphans of the city who introduced the surplus money from the rounds. There's only one itsulapic day at a corner of Pelota Street. It is an emblematic place, visible only in the Old Town itself and the Basilica of Begoña.

The Basque Language Ulibarri made contributions to consolidate and support the celebration of the Chicéritos. From 1985 to 1987, the rounds were attended by trichillers from the Basurto School, directed by Kepa Junkera, bertsolari Jon Enbeita and fanfarries, among others.

Since the establishment of the Working Committee, two honorary Chiefs of Staff are appointed each year. Friends and organizations who have contributed to the preservation of the Bajío tradition are rewarded with the legendary little glass. The winners include the Athletic Super League football team, the former mayor of Bilbao, Josu Ortuondo, and the painter Iñaki García-Ergüin.

The Fiesta de los Chiquiteros is one of the symbols of the personality of the people of Bilbao, but it could not be without the performance of the Peña de Athletic de los Sevenales. In the words of the vice-president of this peña, José Mari Grande, the Chiciteo has decreased significantly: “The traditional jubilee gangs operate, but the new generations have a different way of life and don’t go out to take the bass. In our time, we used to take 14 chicks, but 3-4 days is enough. Besides, it’s expensive.” Around 4,000 pintxos are prepared for the feast day and everyone who participates can eat them with their half-bass, which is usually the wine of the year. “We like to do it, but it’s a lot of work and it’s expensive.” A grant will be requested from the capital city council for the next event.
