EH Bila asks the mayor of Bilbao to question the bullfighting
  • On June 18, an anti-bullfighting demonstration was held in Bilbao under the slogan It’s not a party, it’s an insult. The mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, has been asked to question the bulls.

The proposal, which called for questions about bullfighting, was brought to the plenary in late May by EH Bila. It was not approved, because despite the support of Udalberri and Vigo Bilbao, the PNV, PSE-EE and PP opposed it. They argued that the issue of bullfighting “did not appear on the list of concerns of the people of Bilbao”.

After the demonstration on May 18, Lander Etxeberria, spokesperson for EH Bil, asks Juan Mari Aburto to organize a consultation on bullfights. “The public has said so far that they were not concerned about the issue, but this weekend it has become clear that people want to express their opinion on the issue.” He added that the time had come to end the ill-treatment of animals, “even less so when public money is devoted to it.”

The anti-bullfighting rally in Bilbao brought together thousands of people on 18 June (3,000 people, according to EH Bil). The event was attended by anti-bullfighting agents and representatives of EH Bil, Udalberri and Gara Bilbao of the city council. They demanded the abolition of bullfighting and demanded that citizens be consulted about the Semana Mayor of Bilbao.
