They call to mobilize for the prisoners in the U9: "We can't take normalized what's not normalized."
  • At the press conference on Wednesday, Bake Bidea and Sare called to mobilize on 9 January against violations of the rights of Basque prisoners. In Ipar Euskal Herria, under the motto "Argi dugu, Bakererako bidea, orain presoak", the protest will take place in Baiona; in Hego Euskal Herria, the mobilizations have been carried out from village to village under the motto "Bidea gara".

Mixel Berhokoirigoin, Anais Funosas, Joseba Azkarraga and Inaxio Oiartzabal have offered a press conference in Donostia-San Sebastián following the decision. In it, they pointed out that the Basque prisoners are aiming to end the violation of rights that live on both sides of the border and that the calls they will make on 9 January at 17:30 are aimed at achieving this.

"We have to acknowledge that in recent months we have seen and have experienced hopeful circumstances, because in Spain something is moving with the approach of prisoners to closer jails, even if they are limited steps. With France, we have faced a major blockade in the last year. The clamor of the political and social majority and its renunciation of the will, chanting to the past, the prosecutor’s office decided to annul the legal channels. The need for a new mobilizing phase led us to make a commitment to share and materialize in Ipar Euskal Herria. The darkness of the tunnel gave absolute clarity. With the conditional release of Xistor Haramboure, 2020 ends with a ray of hope. A fragile but promising light, which we want to do...", they say.

As for Hego Euskal Herria, "we have had approaches almost every week, but we have to denounce that most have not been to Euskal Herria jails and that they are still hundreds of miles away from home. Therefore, we are not at the end of the policy of remoteness," they said.

Although the family and friends of some prisoners have to travel fewer kilometers to visit them, "we cannot assume normalized a situation that is not normalized".

"The end of the removal policy will be a fact when all the prisoners are in the Basque Country. The violation of their rights may be terminated when the possibility of starting the journey home is not limited, for which the progression of the degree will apply. We will be able to end the violation of rights when seriously ill prisoners are released from prison. And when they release the older ones. But, unfortunately, this reality is still a long way off," they said.

They have also given some data: 107 prisoners are in the first grade, 70 in the second grade and only nine in the third grade. In addition, they have reported that over the past 9 months, more than 80 boys and girls have not had the opportunity to hug their mother, their father or both inmates. And if you've had the opportunity to travel, you've put on the table that you've had to do over 1,000 kilometers of travel. "Standardisation is becoming more and more late. The emergency regime has been in place for years for Basque prisoners."

They have therefore asked the governments of Spain and France "not to prolong these deadlines any longer, to apply their legislation and to act with humanity".
