"Mr. Urkullu, if we put kitchens in schools or fill the Duranguesado with chickens"
  • The Berton Bertokoa group consists of the fathers and mothers of the Durangaldea region. They have been working in school canteens for two years to leave the catering system established by the Basque Government and claim a different model: the food prepared in the school, made with organic products from the region. Using humor, they have threatened to fill the Duranguesado with chickens if in one day they do not respond to their demands.

Disguised as pirates, they have addressed their petition to the top leaders of the Basque Government: "We have been asking for another dining model for two years and we see that there is a lack of total will, one thing is said and another is done, or rather, that nothing is done, the catering system that now imposes on us does not satisfy us, we have made concrete proposals for change, we have met with the agents, with the producers, even with the catering companies themselves, but any change is in the hands of the Basque Government and we have seen nothing on its part."

Thanks to the initiatives developed over the course of his two years, Berton Bertokoa’s claim has been supported by numerous groups, cultural groups, trade unions and parties. But in the video they report that "despite the broad support we have, in our schools we still have no seasonal and cooking products."

Boys and girls need a healthy diet to grow and develop well, so make sure how food has been sown to ensure a healthy diet, as well as what type of fertilizers and protection have recibido.Las reasons given by the group to use local products in schools are the following:

  1. It will create jobs in the environment, giving jobs to local producers. Producing what is needed and no more.
  2. It will strengthen the local economy. If we buy local products, the money stays here to reinvest.
  3. It will help to ensure the survival of the villages in the area and to maintain our customs and wisdom.
  4. Compared to remotely imported products, the production of indigenous products leaves a minimal trace of contamination.
  5. The most complete foods are those around us, those that adapt to our climate and our environment: they are the most suitable for our development.
  6. It respects the natural cycle of life, consecrating what is produced in it.
