The Parliament of Navarre has asked the Government of Navarre not to allocate public money to schools that separate pupils by sex. The request has been made for the next course and has been given a period of three months to draw up a plan. The motion tabled by EH Bildu has been supported by the PSN, Geroa Bai, Left and Podemos, while Navarre Suma voted against it.

In the case of the Basque Parliament, on the contrary, it refuses to allocate public money to these educational centres. In this case, the proposal has also been presented by EH Bildu, although it has only been supported by Elkarrekin Podemos. PNV and PSE-EE voted against.

The PSE and the PNV presented their initiative to annul the initiative of EH Bildu. He advanced with the support of PP+C, the abstention of Vox and the rejection of EH Bildu and Elkarrekin Podemos. The text urges the Department of Education to continue to comply with the current regulations on educational concerts “to guarantee the freedom of education and the projects taught in the educational centers of the Basque Country, in accordance with the current legislation”. The PSE-EE MEP, José Antonio Pastor, has said that he shares EH Bildu’s proposal, although he has taken the view that it is not time to withdraw this funding.

In the case of Navarra, the motion presented by EH Bildu considers that segregation by sex is discriminatory in education. “The values and models it promotes do not correspond to the steps taken by Navarre in recent years, neither with co-education nor with public policies based on equality”. In his speech, Bakartxo Ruiz, of EH Bildu, has stated that there is a lot of talk about discrimination of any kind and of inequality, and has underlined the need for prevention against it, through social coeducation. According to Ruiz, you cannot achieve that co-education by separating boys and girls in classrooms.
