To Mikel Arregi: "Zoning is not the best option to promote the Basque language"
  • The zoning has not been the best help, recommendation or option for the promotion of the Basque language, according to the director of the Euskarabide. Officialdom would not mean promoting the Basque language in the same way everywhere, but it could be done according to the needs of each locality.

Director of Euskarabide Mikel Arregi and director of planning and promotion of the Basque language Paula Casares.Kasares remembers the evolution of the Basque language in Navarre in the last centuries. At the end of the nineteenth century and as a result of the Spanish Civil War, the Basque language suffered a significant decline. In 1980, the Basque community began to make a revolution. Currently, in the Basque area of Navarre, three out of four are Basque; in the mixed one out of four and the so-called non-Basque area, the situation is more sinister.Zoning is not the best way to help, recommend or promote the Basque language, according to Mikel Arregi.

Establishing official status does not mean that the promotion or dissemination of the Basque language should be treated in the same way everywhere. They believe that the rhythm of each one would be respected.Regarding the situation of the administration, they say, it is not able to attend to the citizens in the desired language and they say that this obligation should start to be enforced because it is mandated by the law.
