Teacher investigated for spreading sexist, fascist and LGTBIphobic messages provisionally rejected by the UPV
  • "Until the matter is clarified, the teacher will not return to the campus," said the rector, Joxerramón Bengoetxea, adding that a "mediation" has been launched to investigate what has happened and see what can be done about it. Iñigo Ugedo, President of the UPV/EHU Student Council, has filed a formal complaint with Bengoetxea.

After Ikama and the Student Council denounced the "racist, transphobic and pro-fascist messages" spread by a teacher on their social networks, the University of the Basque Country has decided to launch an investigation. The rector, Joxerramón Bengoetxea, announced in his statements to the EITB on Saturday that "while the matter is clarified" the teacher will not return to the campus.

The reported professor teaches at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Alava campus, and no such comments have been made as the only professor at the UPV/EHU. At the beginning of the school year, the students denounced a teacher who taught at the Leioa campus, in which case the university responded later, but eventually expelled him.

The president of the Student Council of the UPV, Iñigo Ugedo, filed a formal complaint with Bengoetxe on Friday and demanded "immediate measures". The Patriotic Students group describes the measure as a "step forward", but recalls that the university has taken this measure "because the students have begun to organize themselves". The Ikama organization calls for such cases to be addressed: "We need to stand firm against this and develop alternatives."

"A cyber attack"

According to a press release published by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), the investigated professor filed a complaint with the Basque Government on Friday, stating that he had suffered a "cyber attack" on the networks and that "his identity had been replaced". He also claims that his ideology does not correspond to the messages published in the networks, the UPV said.
