The Department of Health of the Basque Government has expressed its “concern” about the fact that in the 2025-2026 academic year the Faculty of Medicine of the UPV/EHU is not expected to create another place of Basque. The Department of Health emphasizes that with the previous rectory group it has agreed 40 new places in Basque, while in the new course only 16 will be offered. The Health Department has stated that this reduction of 60% will result in a “reduction in the quality” of the educational offer.

The University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) has issued a note stating that this increase in places in the Basque language is not “viable”, at least if one wants to guarantee “quality teaching”, because the university does not have sufficient resources to do so. However, the University of the Basque Country has confirmed its intention to increase the number of places in the next academic years.

The creation of new seats in the Basque language was agreed at the beginning of the current legislature. In this agreement, they wanted to offer 400 places in Medicine and equip places in Basque and Spanish: there are currently 200 places in Spanish and 168 in Basque.
