A month of closure in Usurbil for the dismissal of Basque prisoners
  • “To the Street! To win peace and freedom”, a group of former prisoners presented on Tuesday in Bilbao an initiative to strengthen the struggle for Basque political prisoners. The group wants to be an “incentive” in the struggle for prisoners. It is explained that various actions will be organized for this purpose, including the closure that will last from December 10 to January 8 in Usurbil.

This new initiative, made up of about fifteen ex-prisoners, aims to provide a “qualitative leap” on the road to the eviction of prisons. It has been explained that it has arisen as a result of information and opinions received in numerous debates throughout the Basque Country. The group intends to collaborate with other agents already in action, complementing the work they will carry out.

The spokesman of the group Oihana Garmendia has stated that they seek “the activation of the people’s struggle to get their fellow prisoners out as soon as possible.” With the name of the initiative they wanted to explain the objectives of the group: “The Return of the Prisoners and the Need for the People to Go to the Streets.”

The action of Usurbil will begin on December 10 at 7 pm with the opening of the “Space to the Street”. They want to take advantage of the action to engage in dialogue with social actors, trade unions and political parties in order to make further progress on this issue. On 8 January, the end of the closure will be accompanied by a massive press conference with the presence of a large number of former prisoners and fugitives.

It is anticipated that the closure in Usurbil will be accompanied by a series of actions, both in Usurbil itself and in other parts of the Basque Country:

A huge Mus tournament will be held on 17 December. They want to bring together as many couples as prisoners there. There are currently 358 political prisoners in prisons.

On the 24th of December they will go to the prison.

-December 31, last day of the year, they will organize walks to the prisons of Basauri, Martutene and Lannemezan.

There will be a parade in San Sebastian on January 6.
