Five people died on a ship en route to the Canary Islands. The boat crashed five meters from the shore and five bodies were found during the rescue operation, as well as a badly injured child and another missing child. It has not been determined whether the five dead have died during the voyage or during the sinking of the ship.

The accident occurred in front of the Marine Rescue ship. The ship carrying the migrants was about to perform the manoeuvre to be placed next to the Salvadorans of the Sea and carry out the rescue. The ship turned around while they were there, and the 180 migrants who were there fell into the sea.

Among those who travel from Africa to Europe, the most dangerous route is that of the Canary Islands. The NGO Caminando Fronteras analyzes these data, and according to the latest report, in 2024, 9,700 people lost their lives on this route: that is, almost 30 migrants every day. Last year’s figures are the highest in history, with a 30% increase in deaths compared to the previous year.
