“Euskera and food have similarities: it belongs to everyone, but at the same time it belongs to no one,” says Ugalde. Therefore, they have taken a well-known reference from Euskaraldia and have translated their different roles into food: The options will be Food, Food and Food. “The Elikalagunak are the ones who for a few days will actively act to change and transform their consumption habits; the places where these people will be able to buy, the Feeding Points; and the products they will find in them, the Food Products.”
But where does this special initiative come from? This explains: “On the occasion of National Food Day, we started working to do something with groups that had already gone through food sovereignty and sustainability.” So the idea came up and they've done it. To organise this initiative they are in contact with the agro-ecological producers in Bizkaia.
Regarding the possibilities of sustainable food in Bilbao, Ugalde explained that the plaza is quite difficult: “On the one hand, the Casco Viejo and Bilbao La Vieja are places with a large number of shops in a very small space, but at the same time has evolved very drastically in the last decades, many large food chains have been introduced and many small shops have closed.” In general, it identifies the area as an area in which unconscious and passive consumption has been enhanced and expanded, and aims to present and make known existing alternatives: “We are listing small shops and bars to know what is there and be able to make a later diagnosis.”
In the first half of September the Food list is expected to be closed, and then Elikalagun opens the registration. For the days of the feeding, they also intend to organize initiatives with the students, market of the neighborhood, cooking workshops, meetings… The objective will be to reach as many citizens as possible and offer them resources: “It will serve to further deepen those already in the process of transformation and to know those who did not know other models.”
