The statement "Now Prisoners" was released on June 2 by 46 well-known faces of culture, universities, politics and communication. "Today," they write, "although ETA has ceased to exist, there are 282 Basque prisoners who are hundreds or thousands of kilometres away from their relatives. Despite the fact that these people in prison enjoy their rights, they are still subject to exceptional measures that contravene both Spanish and European legislation and punish not only the prisoner, but also family members, especially children and elderly people."

To begin to guide this, the signatories see four specific issues that need to be resolved immediately:

- Get away from him. Which forces hundreds of family members to walk hundreds of miles every weekend.
- Seriously ill prisoners. Before a few days of life remain, inmates who are sick have the right to be cared for properly, here and now.
- The application of the sum of the penalties of two States, as stipulated in the European legislation.
- First grade change. Basque prisoners serve 100% of their sentence in first grade, which is against the law.

"It is time to untie the knots," say the promoters of Now Prisoners, "it is time to unite those of us who have not been able to unite. It is time to resolve the issue of the present." They call on citizens to join the demonstration being organized for October 20th, "to help it become the largest mobilization ever in this country."
