The so-called Commission of Control and Transparency of the Border Guard, headed by former Judge Juan Luis Ibarra, is investigating the events that took place at the end of August last year near Irún (Gipuzkoa). On August 29, on the GI-636, there was a traffic accident between a car and a motorcycle. The driver was taken to the hospital, but the driver was injured. At that time, the man suffered a heart attack and died in the hospital of San Sebastián (Guipúzcoa) some time later.
Preliminary reports indicate that this person lost his life "due to natural causes" and have not investigated or charged the border guards who participated in the intervention. Several witnesses add that the Civil Guard also intervened in the attempted arrest. It appears that the above-mentioned commission is now conducting an investigation into the police intervention in which a death case was opened by a court in Irun. Last February, the commission requested a report from the Department of Security of the Basque Government on the status of the open court case.
The Government made a number of accusations against the deceased, which are commonly used in such cases: That the police had difficulty in arresting him, that he was "agitated", that he "attacked" and "threatened" the police, that he tried to escape, etc. It was at this moment that the man suffered a heart attack.
In the death of Eneko Valdés, the commission defended the Basque Country
A year ago, when investigating the police intervention in which Eneko Valdés lost his life in Astigarraga (Gipuzkoa), the Border Control and Transparency Committee declared the police forces innocent. The police and police officers participated in the operation when the victim suffered a psychotic outbreak, but in less than an hour he was dead. He had punches on his face, several broken bones, lacerations and marks of taser guns on his body, among other things. He said he had "done the injuries to himself."
