OPEN THE DOORS TO THE OFFICIAL!
The “vascuencea” law, which zoning linguistic rights in Navarre, celebrates its 30th anniversary tomorrow, December 15. During these long years, we have been subjected to the UPN’s planned anti-Basque language policy, aimed at rejecting the native language of Navarre. But fortunately times have changed and the attitude of the current Navarrese government is different from the previous one.
However, this position meets an old limit, among other things: the law of “vascuencea”, which creates contradictions between the parties that support the government. The most insignificant part of overcoming it has been done and the steps taken under the auspices of this law will inevitably be insufficient.
On this anniversary, the absurd zoning of language rights is still in force, as if living in Basque was an option linked to a specific area. When and in the 21st century! To live in Basque is legitimate, it is to keep alive the identity of the Navarrese society, as well as having the right that we individuals have: both in the north and in the south. Living in the U.S. is not intentional.
We must therefore proclaim loudly, after three decades, that it is time to take action. If Basque is for everyone, what can the government do for Basque? Well, promote a change that will also be irreversible in the linguistic field: A new law that guarantees the recognition of language rights throughout the territory. It would be just social justice. The government needs to act responsibly, whether it wants to or not, because the future comes in Basque!
But it is up to us, the citizens, to demand that the time has come to open the doors to the official. We can’t stop looking at the institutions. In addition to demanding responsibilities, from now on, we must do what is in our power. It is up to us to focus on strengthening the choice of living in Basque and provoking changes. Examples are not few: from citizens who have asked to have a relationship with the city council in Basque, from neighbors who want a Basque doctor and pediatrician, from parents who have proclaimed a Basque children's school... But we must intensify them, light more small fires, until a fire is achieved that favors the fundamental changes necessary to live in Basque.
On the eve of the 15th of December, the EHE wishes to call for the celebration of the new Basque law in the coming anniversaries to live, organize and proclaim what belongs to us in Basque.
