The Language School of Durango apologizes for the council in pure Spanish
  • The student representative, Marina Ealo, criticizes on social networks that the last council of the Official Language School was held only in Spanish. The EHE joins in the denunciation and expresses its support for Ealo; Berbaro calls for "respect for the linguistic rights of the Basques" in all spaces. The director of the School of Languages responded: "It's clear that we didn't behave properly."

Marina Ealo is surprised by the impact her criticism has had these days, but after last week’s meeting, she decided not to remain silent. According to him, this was not the first time; even in February the school council was held in pure Spanish. The same thing happened again in June. I don’t think it’s normal, it’s serious,” says the student representative. She is studying German and is a teacher at another school. He spoke at the end of the assembly defending the use of Basque and says that he was "called to attention", telling him to continue in Spanish.

According to Ealo, the council is made up of 25 people, only one of whom did not know Basque. Apparently, this professor had a "tumultuous attitude" at the time of his lecture. He added that he was surprised by the silence of the other councillors.“If things stay that way on the school board, I’m not going to participate anymore,” Ealo predicts.

Apology of the Management

The Directorate of the School of Languages has sent a note to ANBOT after the debate of these days. "We have to recognize that we acted in Spanish because two out of sixteen people at the meeting did not know Basque and a third just passed the A1 level. We don't even want to justify ourselves with this, it's clear that we didn't behave properly." The management apologizes to those who have felt offended. "All this, from now on, will be taken into account for the functioning of the school," they said in the note.

Reacting to this observation, Berbaro says that accepting the error and taking action is a “step forward.” "The Durango Language School is with us in the dissemination and promotion of the Basque language and from now on we will continue working to make it so."
